Cardiac Arrest on Sheridan Drive Ends in DNR — 84-Year-Old Woman Pronounced at Home

Amherst Fire toned for an 84-year-old female cardiac arrest at 8350 Sheridan Drive between Clearview and Glenwood; a Do-Not-Resuscitate order was confirmed within eight minutes.

At 7:33 p.m. Amherst Fire Dispatch paged out a Code 99 to 8350 Sheridan Drive, between Clearview Drive and Glenwood Avenue, for an 84-year-old female in cardiac arrest.[1] Hansel 7 was rolling within a minute and command staged in the driveway off Glenwood. By 7:40 the on-scene officer keyed up with the line every fire dispatcher quietly braces for: “Let’s go to confirmation with a DNR.”[2] The scene was turned over to the Erie County Sheriff for the paracelsus (death-investigation) handoff and remaining units were placed back in service at 7:47.[3] A quiet, final call on a soft spring evening on the Clearview side of Sheridan.

“Pacing the Shoulder, Checking Garbage Cans, Lying in the Ditch” — Suspicious Man on Hopkins Road

Just past midnight, an Amherst PD unit was put on a male party at Hopkins and Shell Ridge after multiple sightings — on the shoulder, near the trash, and at one point face-down in a ditch.

At 12:06 a.m. an Amherst officer keyed up the most vivid welfare-adjacent description of the window: “A suspicious person complaint in the area of Hopkins and Shell Ridge for a male party who is pacing back and forth on the shoulder of the road, was checking garbage cans, and was laying in the ditch at one point.”[10] The only description the officer had to work with: a hoodie and pajama pants.[11] The call did not generate a transport or an arrest update during the window — he was either talked off the shoulder or moved on under his own power before the next unit cleared.

Fox Pest Control Salesman on a Segway “Bothering Everybody” on Sweetwood Drive

Amherst PD spent the back half of 6 p.m. tracking down a door-to-door pest-control vendor working Sweetwood Drive on a stand-up scooter — with a permit problem to match.

At 6:17 p.m. an Amherst officer was sent to 67 Sweetwood Drive “for the Fox Pest Control guy.”[5] The complaint, as relayed across the channel a beat later: “He’s on a Segway bothering everybody.”[6] Dispatch added the closing wrinkle that should make any homeowner’s decision easier — “Just be advised, we don’t have them on the vendor list for permits for this month.”[7] Door-to-door sales on a Segway is novel; door-to-door sales on a Segway without a vendor permit is a citation. The call did not produce an arrest, but it did produce the day’s most quintessentially suburban radio moment.

Booed-Off Ref Gets the Last Word — Park School Parent Reported After Game Ejection

An Amherst officer was sent to 4625 Harlem Road just before 6 p.m. for a parent in a Blue Honda CR-V who was “upset that the referee ejected him from the game because he gave them a hard time about a call.”

At 5:52 p.m. an Amherst unit was directed to The Park School of Buffalo, 4625 Harlem Road, on a complaint about a Blue Honda CR-V and one very specific grievance.[8] “He’s upset that the referee ejected him from the game because he gave them a hard time about a call,” the responding officer reported.[9] Whatever the sport, whatever the call, the official won the technical decision and lost the post-game ratings. No charges were sought.

Welfare Check on a Mailbox Full of Mail — Elderly Man Unseen for Four Days

At 4:31 p.m. an Amherst PD officer summarized the kind of call the rest of the night quietly hoped would resolve well.

“Basically the neighbor from down the street says there’s an elderly male that resides at a club that’s not been seen the last four days,”[12] the officer told dispatch. “The mailbox is full of mail and these front doors open.”[13] A second officer headed in to assist with patrol; cover from number 16 was added a minute later and that officer cleared from a separate stop to assist. The window closed before any resolution came across the air. The quietest stories from the radio are usually the heaviest, and this one belongs at the top of that list this morning.

Three Sports Cars and a Mother on Foxboro: Late-Evening Harassment Cluster on Amherst’s East Side

A rolling string of escalating-domestic calls walked across Amherst’s eastern grid between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. — a child refusing to leave a vehicle on KMAR Drive, “a lot of yelling” on Swanson, sports-car teenagers at 45 Foxboro Lane, and two unrelated callers on Allenhurst and Capen reporting a woman screaming for help.

At 8:01 p.m. an officer responded to a domestic-style call where “her son is refusing to leave the vehicle and he’s putting his hands in front of her face. She feels unsafe at this time,” with the subject ultimately located on KMAR Drive near Sweetwood and Edgewater.[18] By 9:42 p.m. the harassment ledger had moved to 45 Foxboro Lane, where the “complaint’s leading mother says there’s three sports cars outside her house full of teenagers that are looking to beat up her son who is not on location.”[16] Just before 11 p.m. two separate callers — one at 443 Allenhurst, one at 420 Capen — both reported hearing a female yelling for help, with the responding officer noting on-air, “I don’t know if it’s coming from the streets or the alleyway.”[17] Each thread was being worked when the next one paged. Routine night-shift wash for Amherst PD, but a tense and very loud three-hour stretch of it.

Flock Camera Catches a Toyota Corolla Carrying a Niagara County Man With Dementia

Just before 1 a.m., Amherst PD picked up an automated license-plate-reader hit on a missing subject out of Niagara County with dementia — the wife told investigators he had said he was going to buy a new TV at Best Buy.

At 12:58 a.m. an Amherst officer announced over the air, “About 20 minutes ago, there was a flock hit for a subject out of Niagara County with dementia…the white Toyota Corolla was shown on the flock camera.”[21] An update from Niagara County followed at 1:17: “He did tell the wife he was going to buy a new TV at Best Buy. You just check over there for his white Toyota Corolla.”[22] Amherst units were directed eastbound and asked to keep eyes out around the Boulevard Mall corridor. The vehicle was not confirmed located on-air before the window closed.

What the…?!

“Wood Crust” Reports a Rabid Raccoon Running Around the House

At 5:40 p.m. an Amherst officer keyed up with what may be the season’s defining wildlife complaint, given to dispatch as a residential address that came across the air as “Wood Crust” [unclear street name]: “I got a rabid raccoon running around the house.”[41] Dispatch’s reply was a single deadpan word: “Sounds work.” The call appears to have cleared without intervention from animal control on the air, which means the raccoon is somewhere out there, still running, very possibly still rabid.

Now Boarding

United Ramp Coughs Up the Day’s Best Self-Correction: “Some Bad Guys” → “Some Bags”

At 7:59 p.m. on the United Ramp channel at the Buffalo Niagara airport, a ramp agent radioed the inbound: “We’re going to have some bad guys getting off this Washington flight.”[32] Seven seconds and one quiet TSA-shaped panic later: “We’re going to have some bags coming off this Washington flight.”[33] The Listening Post would like to formally apologize to the bags.

Hospitality

Room 2516 Has a Microwave Problem — And, an Hour Later, Has Stepped Out

At 8:26 p.m. an Embassy Suites front-desk attendant in the Niagara Region paged maintenance with the entire night’s itinerary in one breath: “2516-2516, can we please have a microwave problem?”[34] By 10:32, when the maintenance lead tried to make contact, the report came back: “There’s no answer in 2516. They might have stepped out.” A microwave problem in absentia is the platonic ideal of the hospitality-radio genre. Earlier in the evening, an Embassy shuttle driver had cheerfully canvassed the front-of-house: “Do you have any guests going out for a bingo?”[35] No takers were noted on the air.

School Bus Wire

Bus Driver to the 600 Buses: There’s a “Big Old Skunk Chillin’ Right Behind Me”

At 6:01 a.m. on the Kenmore-Tonawanda Union Free School District bus channel, a driver delivered the early-shift courtesy alert of the week: “I’m gonna let the 600 buses know there’s a big old skunk chillin’ right behind me.”[30] Earlier in the previous day, on the same channel: “I’m going to be turning left on haulers, and I’m a pirate.”[31] No further explanation was offered; none was needed.

Distribution

Larkin Building Security: “Swing by the Loading Dock Door to Let Buffalo News In”

At 10:14 p.m. on the Larkin Building’s in-house business channel, the night shift coordinated the most quietly nostalgic radio detail of the window: a literal Buffalo News delivery to the loading dock door, escorted in by a guard.[36] Print isn’t dead. It just has to be walked in by someone with a key.

Highway Theatre

Pre-Dawn Erratic on the 90: A White J.B. Hunt Bobtail “Tailgating, High Beaming, Trying to Block People”

At 5:03 a.m. New York State Thruway dispatch put out a complaint about “a white J.B. Hunt bobtail truck, unable to maintain lanes or speed” on the eastbound Thruway, with the caller stating the trucker had “struck his vehicle, possibly on his phone.”[37] By 5:54 the same complainant had elaborated: “Tailgating, high rate of speed, cutting vehicles off, high beaming, trying to block people.” The bobtail eventually pulled into the Angola service plaza on its own.

Wrong Turn

“I’m Incredibly Lost Coming From the Holding Center Trying to Get to Niagara Falls”

At 10:23 p.m. on the Amherst-Clarence trunk, an officer transporting a subject keyed up with the line every cop denies has ever happened to them: “I’m incredibly lost coming from the holding center trying to get to Niagara Falls.”[38] The dispatcher walked him out on the air without breaking stride. The transport reached its destination.

Limo Wire

Buffalo Limo Dispatcher Logs a Backseat Situation: “Still Throwing Food Out the Window and Yelling”

At 10:04 p.m. a Buffalo Limo dispatcher relayed a customer-experience update no one wants to file: “She states that she’s still throwing food out the window and yelling.”[39] The advisory closed with a tactful “She was very upset.” The Listening Post is choosing to assume the food survived.

FRS Roundup

“There Is a Mexican Restaurant in Berkholz’s District”

Three of the four Family Radio Service transmissions captured this window were a single sentence each. The keeper, at 5:21 p.m. on FRS 20, was offered without preamble or follow-up: “There is a Mexican restaurant in Berkholz’s district.”[40] A separate FRS 01 user, in the afternoon, philosophized: “Oh, you know, I’m sorry. I don’t know what he’s saying.” A third, on FRS 16 at 7:36 p.m., signed off with: “We’ll be right back.” They were not.

Cheektowaga PD Logs a Suicide-Line Hand-Off — 27 Mildred, Female With a Knife, Drove Off

At 1:12 a.m. a Cheektowaga PD dispatcher relayed a hand-off from a national crisis-line vendor for a female subject at 27 Mildred who had told the line she wanted to kill herself “by taking pills or cutting” once her mother fell asleep.[23] A unit arrived at 1:12 to find the subject had left in a vehicle with a knife.[24] Dispatch noted prior mental-health history on the resident. Cheektowaga units were canvassing as the window closed.

Multi-Engine Response to Canisius Townhouses on West Delavan — Commercial Alarm in Building C

At 6:52 p.m. Buffalo Fire Channel 1 dispatched investigative units to the Canisius Townhouses on West Delavan between Howard and Main on a commercial fire alarm coming from Building C, with the panel reading a P.S. (pull-station) level activation.[25] The hold was light and no fire was reported back across the channel during the cover period.

Water Flow From the Basement at 905 Elmwood: Two Engines, Ladder, Battalion Out for a Stove Malfunction

At 9:34 p.m. BFD Channel 1 sent Engine 19, Ladder 4 and Battalion 45 to 905 Elmwood at Allocate Development between St. James Place — a preliminary signal Level 2 response on water flow from the basement.[26] By 9:41 the on-scene chief had cleared most companies; by 9:57 the chief was on the air explaining: “I heard an issue with the stove and that’s all I heard. Yeah, we shut off the gas going through the stove…we’re all set here.”[27] A clean outcome on a high-rip page.

Two Pages, Two Schools: Alden Bus Garage and Alden Intermediate Both Light Up Lancaster FD

At 8:21 p.m. Lancaster FD dispatched a general fire-alarm activation at the Alden School bus garage.[28] Eighteen minutes later, Millgrove Volunteer was paged to Alden 1648 Crittenden Road, the Alden Intermediate School, for “smoke in the kitchen.”[29] Whether the two pages share an HVAC zone or just a bad-luck Wednesday wasn’t resolved on-air.

Editor’s Note

Yesterday afternoon and overnight ran on a slow, even simmer — 1,946 segments across 30 active systems, dominated by routine Amherst PD traffic but with a real cardiac call on Sheridan Drive that ended in a DNR and a steady drumbeat of late-evening welfare and harassment pages on Amherst’s east side. Buffalo Fire was busy enough to chase a basement water-flow at 905 Elmwood and a multi-engine alarm at the Canisius Townhouses; out in Lancaster, the Alden school district lit up Lancaster FD twice in twenty minutes. No Tier Alpha matches, no Watchlist properties, no follow-up traffic carrying over from yesterday’s PM brief — so this morning’s edition leans on a rabid raccoon, a Segway-mounted pest-control salesman, and a hotel maintenance lead who never could get an answer in 2516.

Daily Gem

“I got a rabid raccoon running around the house.”
